pediatric care in Portugal

As an expat woman in Portugal, one of the many decisions you’ll face is choosing between a private pediatrician for your baby or relying on the family doctor and care team at your local health centre. Here, we’ll explore the considerations you might need to keep in mind to make your own informed choice about pediatric care in Portugal.

1. Registration at the Health Centre

The first step is to ensure you’re registered at the health centre or primary care unit in your living area. Registration grants you access to Portugal’s public healthcare services, which include primary care for your family. Being registered at a local health centre is essential for receiving consistent and reliable healthcare.

2. Assigned Family Doctor/Nurse

Once registered, the next step is to find out if you have an assigned family doctor or nurse. This can be challenging, especially in larger metropolitan areas like Lisbon or Porto, where the demand for healthcare professionals is high. It’s not uncommon to experience long waits before being assigned a fixed family doctor. During this period, you might see different doctors or nurses at each appointment.

3. Evaluating Your Relationship with Your Family Doctor

If you do have an assigned family doctor/family nurse (= family care team), it’s important to evaluate your relationship with them. Consider the following questions:

  • Do you share aligned values regarding your child’s health and wellness?

  • Does your family doctor respect your choices and provide individualized care?

  • Is your family doctor available to answer your questions and provide the support you need?

If your answers are positive, you may not feel the need for a private pediatrician in Portugal. However, if you’re not satisfied with the care your family doctor provides, it might be worth considering a private pediatrician.

The Benefits of a Private Pediatrician

Choosing a private pediatrician in Portugal offers several advantages:

  • Personalized Care: Private pediatricians often have more time to spend with each patient.

  • Availability: A private pediatrician may be more readily available for appointments, and might share their whatsapp number or email.

  • Consistency: You’ll see the same doctor at each visit, ensuring continuity of care and a deeper understanding of your child’s health history.

When selecting a private pediatrician, look for someone near your living area who aligns with your values and respects your parenting choices. A good match can make a significant difference in your overall experience and satisfaction.

Building Your Support Network

As part of my consulting services, I help expat women in Portugal build a robust support network. This includes connecting you with like-minded professionals, including private pediatricians, who can support you through your parenting journey. My goal is to ensure you feel at home in Portugal, confident in your healthcare choices, and supported every step of the way.

Conclusion

Deciding between a private pediatrician and relying on your family doctor at the health centre is a personal choice that depends on your specific needs and circumstances. By evaluating your current healthcare situation and considering your options, you can make the best decision for your family’s needs and peace of mind.
